Many FileZilla users have come across an issue regarding a failed EAI when trying to connect to an FTP server.
I have personally experienced two different types of EAI errors and I have provided examples of these below.
1. EAI_NODATA – No address Associated with nodename.
Status: Resolving address of ftp.peterstavrou.com
Status: Connection attempt failed with “EAI_NODATA – No address Associated with nodename”
Error: Could not connect to server
2. EAI_NONAME – Either nodename nor servname provided, or not known.
Status: Resolving address of ftp.peterstavrou.com
Status: Connection attempt failed with “EAI_NONAME – Neither nodename nor servname provided, or not known”.
Error: Could not connect to server
I noticed that this started happening after a specific FileZilla update and it is still occurring for a few people even after multiple software updates. I’m not quite exactly sure what the cause of the issue is but seeing as I could not find a solution to this problem anywhere, I decided to share a quick fix or at least workaround I discovered.
The Fix For The FileZilla Error – “Failed With EAI”
Basically all you need to do is replace the Hostname with the Host IP Address.
-
- 1. Go to FileZilla and open the Site Manager.
-
- 2. Click on your Site and you will see that your Host is currently ftp.YourWebsite.com
-
- 3. You now need to replace the Hostname with the IP Address.
To get the IP Address of the Host, open Command Prompt by clicking on Start and typing cmd in the search programs and files box.
Alternatively you can go to Start –> All Programs –> Accessories –> Command Prompt - 4. Once Command Prompt opens, type in ping YourWebsiteAddress.com
- 3. You now need to replace the Hostname with the IP Address.
-
- 5. See how it says Reply from and then a number? That is the IP Address that you need to use instead of the Host.
- 6. If you still having trouble connecting then you can try changing the encryption method from Use explicit FTP over TLS if available to Only use plain FTP (insecure). However by doing so, your FTP connection will be insecure.

Doesn’t work for me. Tried the host name and then the IP but still get the error.
Do you get the exact same error message though when you use the IP? It’s probably a different one.

I put the i.p address as host as you suggested and it worked like a charm.
Thank you.

Hi, can you help me. i am getting this error: “Connection attempt failed with “EAI_FAIL – Nonrecoverable failure in name resolution”. It started suddenly. and no ftp is working.
Can you ping your website and get an IP address back in CMD?
Also try scanning your computer for Malware using Malwarebytes.
Thanks for the response. Yes i do get the IP address in CMD. Actually i ma not able to connect to non of my websites from filezilla which were working before. Also i scanned my computer using Malwarebytes and it did found some threats and they got quarantined. But still i am having the same issue.
That is very strange… At least you got rid of the threats.
I guess the next step would be to contact your host and explain to them the issue, it might be that there blocking your access.
Alternatively, you can try a different FTP client.
Yes thanks for your suggestions. I used winscp in the mean time. But somehow i have managed to solve it. I have restored my system to an earlier date. And now filezilla is working again.
Great work!
Looks like. Thanks for your time and help.
Still receiving “Connection attempt failed with “87” message
Hmmm… you may need to contact your host about this one.
Connection attempt was FTP.
I was using 192.185.186.121 which was the ping result for one my websites.
I am now receiving “Connection attempt failed with “87” message instead of “EAI_FAIL – Nonrecoverable failure in name resolution”.
Can you try with 216.12.194.67?
No, sadly it didn’t. With a host like HostGator is this method possible?
It should also work with HostGator.
I’m guessing the website your trying to connect to via FTP is TLP?
If so, please try the IP’s – 192.185.186.123 or 216.12.194.67
